Why call it photography and not graphic or visual art. These artists are not painting with light (the definition of photography) but instructing/prompting the production of art.

AI photorealistic would be more accurate, like we don’t talk about “an AI oil painting” but rather oil painting effect AI. AI can’t do paintings, watercolours, drawings or photographs, so new technology needs new language to talk about it.

I think this needs to be simplified. To paraphrase Charles Harbutt, photography is the only art (if it is an art at all) where either you or your camera have to actually be there. In this, I think the first speaker and the others are missing the point - and POWER of lens-based art. The conceptual basis of the art presented by the second speaker is impressive, but is it what we would know as photography? Also, the fact that generative art does not denote authorship and images taht are made by generative means are not LEGALLY considered having an artist at the back side - then outside of being part of a collective authorship (since generative art needs the memory muse of everything that has literally be made before it to have this machine that learns know) why do these prompters even think what they have done is their own work at all??? Maybe this is as basic as Kant's moral premise that protecting consciousness is the only thing that is worth fighting for, And AI is not our human consciousness.

Oh, and don't quote Sontag and Barthes. Philosphers and not photographers. Think who your audence is! I think the cat that points out that it is mostly a "artifical whiteness" that we are seeing, the infomatic game is "game over".

As a photographer and a book collector I immensely enjoyed this presentation! And as a former publishing designer I appreciate the in-depth talk about the polygraphic process of printing this book. Years ago I used to work in a small publishing house back in Ukraine and we did everything from the start (scanning, graphics, layout design) to finish (plates, offset printing on German Heidelbergs, binding etc). I had a privilege of working along side old school master printers with decades of experience behind their backs. So I get what it takes to produce a good quality book in general. And to publish a great photobook requires a lot more! Great job with "Wires Crossed"! • On a related but sad note: on May 23rd, 2024 Russia committed yet another war crime when the Russian rocket strike destroyed a big printing house Vivat Factor-Druk (Фактор-Друк) in the city of Kharkiv, killed 7 employees. The scenes of thousands of books burning were heartbreaking. It was one of the largest publishing houses in Ukraine.

I'm just starting photography at 62 years young. The reason I began is due to everything you are saying in these videos. I totally 'grok' what your artistic process is as I think it's going to be mine also. I am already feeling the exact same 'stirrings' of my Soul. Thank you Joel so much. Plus it helps me with my isolation to be able to go out and meet others through my camera as I am always socially a bit nervous. It helps me see things anew and sometimes I see things in the picture which aren't there like eyes in the clouds etc.
